In this post I explain a different business model that’s very easy to get into and is one of the best ways to get cash flow coming in while you build your own online business. I’m referring to Adwords consulting.
Adwords consulting is simply where you manage other businesses Adwords account for them. There’s a lot of small businesses out there that know they should be using Google Adwords but they’re not because they don’t know how to do it, or they are using Adwords yet they are doing a terrible job with it as they don’t understand it and don’t have time to manage it as they’re usually busy with running their business.
The great thing about managing Adwords for small businesses is that its not terribly hard to do as the competition can be much lower in many markets and the total spend is not often very high so you’re not responsible for huge budgets.
A friend of mine who’s only just been getting into online marketing said he got offered to set up and manage an Adwords campaign for a small local business recently. I told him to go for it as it would not be hard to do, and that I’d help him do it.
You’d be surprized how often people are keen for help when you tell them you’re into online marketing, so the opportunities tend to present themselves.
After this conversation it dawned on me how simple it is for people who understand Adwords to start making money by managing campaigns for other businesses.
In order to be able to set up and manage an Adwords campaign well you need to learn how to set up campaigns and adgroups and target keywords, plus write and test great ad copy and manage your bids. On top of that a good understanding of how to increase conversions on a webpage is vital.
So if you’re new to online marketing, or even been doing this for a while and you want to get some money coming in to pay the bills while you work on other website ideas for yourself, then Adwords consulting might be something you should seriously consider.
Each client might only require 15 mins management a day on their campaigns, so once you have 3-4 you’ll be earning while you work on your own ideas for the rest of the day.
You can usually charge 10% of the clients overall Adwords spend, and the average small business spend is about $4000, which would be $400 a month for each client for you. So $400 x 4 = $1600 a month for a few hours work a day.
Adwords Consulting Workshop
If there’s enough interest in this topic of learning how to effectively do Adwords consulting, then I can run a training workshop where I’ll hire a guest Adwords consulting expert that I know to run a live coaching workshop and teach people everything they need to know in order to get started doing this. This would include showing people how to officially get Adwords accredited also.
In order to recoup my cost of hiring the expert and to ensure we only get serious people, this would be a paid event.
If you’re interested in this please comment below saying “yes” and whatever else you want to add. If I get enough response I’ll run the workshop.
I look forward to hearing from you.
UPDATE
The response has been great, so I have organized the Adwords workshop. The date will be late January, and I’ll update the blog with all the details closer to the time.
Regards
Matt
yes
Hey Matt, yeah sounds good.
Side note: Are you looking at doing any more training webinars or courses on backlinking? I see a lot of people are investing in building their own small private networks using expired domains etc. Is that something you’re currently doing or have done?
Cheers, Jon.

Yes.
Hi Matt, yes I would certainly be interested in it as I was planning to move into adwords but I was not quite sure how to approach it.
Would like it to be recorded though as time difference is normally an issue.
Lourens
Hi Matt,
Sounds good if you can find the time. I really need to think about outsourcing, not enough hours in the day.
Thanks,
John.
Hi Matt, That would be REALLY great, thank you. It would be timely help for me …

I got it directly from the guy who would do the Adwords consulting workshop.
$4000 is not much, I have one tiny lead gen site and I spend $3200 on it.
Adwords is great but it can half burn a quick hole in your pocket!!!

Sure thing
Hey Matt,
In a way, it’s similar to local or small business SEO..less competition.
I’d be interested in a webinar and I’ve even pay for a course!
Cheers,
Ryan
That sounds great, I’m interested!
Matt,
I’ve been getting into adwords consulting as well. I need to improve my ability to improve the landing pages. Otherwise the quality scores of my client’s will be low, thus affecting the whole campaign. Can you include that in the paid training?
hi Matt- Yes I would be interested… thanks for all you do & the great info you provide!!
Yes.
Yes would be very interested.
Matt,
Always a pleasure to read your posts
Thanks mate
Sure I am in
This would be a an interest for me, you come up with very good information about internet marketing needs, please keep it up.
Matt, this should be interesting…! Yes from me!
Hi Matt,
It’s a Yes from me too.
Steve
Hey Matt,
The idea sounds great and who couldn’t use a thousand extra bucks a month!
But, as you say; “In order to be able to set up and manage an Adwords campaign well you need to learn how to set up campaigns and adgroups and target keywords, plus write and test great ad copy and manage your bids. On top of that a good understanding of how to increase conversions on a webpage is vital.” – these are integral skills not that easily gained. Especially being a good ad-copy writer.
I would love to do a quick easy set-up and income. However, unless I’m mistaken, I have serious reservations on the quick & easy for those who do not already possess the vital skills necessary to do this???
I would like to be wrong on this as, I for one, definitely need a quick and easy way to produce $1,000 to $1,600/mth. in income!
Do it Matt!!
I have known about adwords for a long time but really have not had a clue as to how they work, and not too many courses have been offered on this subject matter, although I know that Lisa Parmley has quite a bit of knowledge on this. So yes I would be interested in learning this
subject matter, because I do know from what knowledge I do have that it is a good way to make money. Paul
yes
Yes Yes Yes….
$4,000 a month is a lot more than “small” businesses spend, most go with $10 to $20 a day (max), at least in my experience.
Yes, sounds like a great workshop!
Yes, please. Should be interesting to see how other people do it. 🙂
That sounds a good idea, Matt.Would like to really learn about Adwords.
Hi Matt, it sounds interesting. I`ll be happy to know of this and thanks for your hard work.
yes
Yes, I would be interested in paying for a webinar on learning how to use Adwords. Sounds like a very handy skill to have – if for nothing else than testing for my own campaigns.
Hi Matt,
Yes I would be interested in the adwords course. I hope there are enough people interested.
Cheers, Barry
Interested in a downloadable replay only.
Yes from me!
Count me in Matt. I have been following you for a while. This would be something not only beneficial as a possible side venture but would be helpful in making sure that i am running my own campaigns in the most efficient and cost effective manner
Yes
Yes Matt, sounds like it could be good.
Yes,I never heard for adwords consulting before.
YES
I am in
Yes. You always give good advice, so if the price is right I’d love to check this out. Thanks 😉
YES….also it would be good if it could be recorded and then we could download to our hard drive or mobile devices so that we can refer to the course later as required.
I like the idea, could be a good new source of income.
Absolutely
Yes…I’m always up for insights to new business models!
Thanks Matt!
yes, I would be interested in this webinar.
Definitely yes!
Hi Matt,
Great topic..
I am in the AdWords world both as a consultant and with an agency. Working in the Boston MA metro area and I can tell you that the average small business AdWords budget is a lot less than $4K/month. More like $1-2K depending on the vertical and size of the business. That being said – charging 10% of spend would require quite a few accounts to meet substantial part-time earning goals. Now a 10% management fee is not written in stone and I see agencies charging as much as 50%.
AdWords consulting can be a great door opener or even loss leader (at 10%) into local businesses where you can eventually pitch and sell your other IM services. There is still the prospecting, attaining and maintaining a client base which for some is not unlike a root-canal.
Anyone interested in the above, I recommend joining the Google Engage program which offers prospect training and collateral as well as AdWords coupons to help any consultant grow their business.
Good Luck All!
Hi Matt,
I was just thinking of how i could get into adwords last night.
So a yes from me. Any idea of how much it would cost?
Yes, I think this would be a great business model, especially since many marketers
are into the next latest and greatest trend, while Adwords has been forgotten.
This is an excellent idee because I just started a website and I have a hard time to get traffic.
If I can make some money with Adwords consulting that would be great.
Thanks for your help.

Yes
This is a great strategy Matt. Which can also lead to some upsells as well 🙂
I would love to hear more about it.
I would be very interested in learning about this.
yes please
yes, yes, yes! (three from me. Need more?)
Yes, I would be interested in learning more about this.
Yes
Thanks Matt – count me in .
have done adwords myself on a website I have since sold so have an idea on how it works but not skilled at it as it took be ages…would like to become skilled…so it’s a yes from me thank you Matt..
I started offering my services as a freelance SEO guy after learning a few tactics just bring in some money finally from my online efforts and ppc has been on my radar for some time.. So long story short – YES TO THAT 🙂
Actually, I often see jobs on freelance sites for adwords management starting at $15 an hour so it certainly has a better pay structure than SEO, on freelance sites in any case. The big plus as well is that every man and his dog from india and around the world is into SEO where as adwords pros are a more select group..
Yes I want to hone my skills for my own websites benefit but also so I can offer my services as well –
All I ask is that the paid event not be too much – with having to buy tools for ppc and being basically broke it needs to be cost effective..
That’s my 2 cents 🙂
Count me in.
Yes, Matt, cost could be an issue, but definitely interested in this possibility.
Hey Matt,
I definitely would be interested in learning more about Google Adwords.
yes if its a recorded webinar
I’m not sure a webinar would do it, maybe a study course would be better. Yes, I’m interested.
Hi Matt,
I enjoy reading your posts and the adwords consulting course sounds great but I have heard that it can be difficult or at least very risky to get into but if it’s within my budget then I’d be interested to learn more.
Thanks

Its not difficult once you know how to do it. People lose money on Adwords when they try and do it with no idea, that is surely a recipe for disaster
Yes, more info on adwords would be good
yes
yes,yes,yes
Yes please Matt,
Sounds like a great idea!
How intensive would you plan on the course being? Would it just a high level overview?
definitely yes ..
YES!!!
YES…AGAIN!!
Hi Matt,
I’d say yes but I’ve been banned for life by Google AdWords. Unfortunately, I made some bad decisions when I was first starting out in internet marketing. Has there been any change to Google’s position on reinstatement of banned individuals?
I like you stuff, by the way…
Al
Yes
YES, I’m interested in this, but would the course also cover how to market and sell such sevices to businesses not knowlegable about this type of marketing, as well as those who have some history of using adwords? How would I prove expertise, potential results etc, I’m asking this as I’m starting from ‘Dummy’ level?
matt thanx for all your advice ,though im still ready your articles i do plan on taking action .
yes, demonstrating the complete business model (setting up the business, how to present a professional image for potential prospects, getting leads, pay structures/hourly rates, work required, how to do it, how to market the business etc.) would be useful…not sure if that could be done in one webinar though !
Yes for me too.
I’m managing PPC campaigns since the beginning of paid trafic (10y) and I plan to offer my service soon for local business. The only issue I would have is billing. Who pay Google? me or my client?
Yes, very interested depending on cost.
Indefinitely Matt.
Nice post Matt.
Many would benefit from this type of course provided the training was all encompassing. Your reputation is such that you will not disappoint but it is important not to under estimate how complex Adwords can be and what a waste of money it can be if you do not do it correctly.
Great offer of assistance on your behalf BTW.
