Perhaps the most common question that I get asked by people in regard to online marketing really, is ‘how do I choose a great niche market?‘. So assuming a lot of my subscribers would like to know this, I decided to write this post on the topic.

Finding a great niche involves uncovering a need that people are looking online to have fulfilled. However it doesn’t mean that you have to find niches that no one has ever found before, which is often where people get confused. I’m sure there are niches out there that no one is marketing in, and you may do well if you find these, but I don’t look for them myself. I prefer to look at niches where there is money being spent, and where I know I can make a site that will out do the competition on some level. You don’t have to be the first one in the niche to be able to make a profitable site in the niche. Just do your site better than the others, and look for weaknesses in the main players sites.

So with that said, some of the key things I like to see in a niche are as follows:

Plenty of Keyword Variation

If I’m going to build a website, I like to build medium/larger sized authority sites in most cases, as I think these perform better in Google. In order to do this, I like to see a lot of keyword opportunities in the niche. If I find that the scope for keywords is narrow, then I quickly give up on a niche and look for another. The kind of markets I like are ones with lots of different topics that I can get content created on. This means I can target lots of keywords, get lots of traffic and produce a good quality site.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking keyword variation means: dog training, train dog, dogs training etc… as that is not good variation, although that probably isn’t the best example, as the dog training niche actually does have a lot of variation, but it looks more like this: train dog to sit, stop dog biting, stop dog peeing on carpet, train dog to roll, Chihuahua training, bulldog training, etc….as you can see there are more different topics.

An Opportunity in the Niche

I also like to see an opportunity in a niche market, where I can do something better than other sites in the market. So I spend some time looking at the main players in the market and analyze their sites, and note down anyway I can do a website better than they are.

Right now I’m working on a site where I’m planning on getting some cool tools made, so that people share the site with friends. This will help create natural links coming in too, and distinguish me from the other sites in the niche. This does take more work and is not essential in all cases, but I thought I would share what I’m doing anyway.

In addition to this, I also like to see an SEO opportunity also. So if it’s hyper competitive for all the main keywords, I will then look at other angles for keywords, and if I still find it to be super competitive then I don’t bother.

I also like to enter niche markets where there is room to grow the site out over time, and even introduce more traffic streams, from YouTube, Facebook, etc…once I gain momentum.

Good Monetization Methods

It’s also important that you’ll be able to monetize the traffic that you get to your site. You can do this in a number of ways, such as affiliate marketing, Adsense, lead generation, ecommerce stores, to name a few popular ones.

You need to make sure you plan out your approach though, so that you know how you intend to convert the traffic. If doing an ecommerce store, make sure you call around suppliers and check prices and availability of stock. If affiliate marketing, then make sure there are some good offers, and also make sure that if an offer stops running, that you have a backup plan. If lead generation, then make sure you’ll be able to find a company willing to buy your leads. This just takes a few calls, not hard to do.

Backup Plans

It pays to have a backup plan for your website in case it’s not working out liked you planned. Let’s say you’ve built a site with intention of using affiliate marketing as your monetization strategy. If the offers aren’t converting, or the merchant stops their affiliate program, then you don’t want to be left with a useless site. This is why it’s always better to choose to domain names that allow room for change.

I’ve been guilty in the past of building on exact match domains that were tightly focussed around one product or a few products and due to the nature of the domain not being able to do much with them in terms of growth or change. Also Google doesn’t really like these thin exact match sites anymore, which is why I updated my Rapid Profit Formula course to this new style.

Some examples of backup plans are to sell the website. You could approach other webmasters in the niche and ask if they’re interested in buying your site. This is obviously easier to do if you have decent traffic. Or if you have a lead generation site for example, and the leads aren’t working out like you planned, then you could approach merchants in the niche and ask if they would like to pay to run a banner on your site. You can get scripts to rotate different banners, so you can have many banners bringing you recurring income.

Another backup plan may even be to become a merchant in the niche yourself. Either way, I think it is wise to plan for all outcomes.

Something Interesting

Although starting a website in a niche you’re interested in is not always great advice, it does have its place. The problem is when your interest is in something that will be extremely difficult to monetize. If your interest is ‘cleaning sinks with a toothbrush’, then I think you’ll struggle to build a profitable website in this niche.

However if you do have a real interest in something that could be monetized then it does make it much easier to produce high quality sites. My ecommerce store is in a niche that I’m passionate about, and my wife too, so working on the store is really enjoyable and researching and producing content too.

Ethical

Another important thing to consider is whether the niche is an ethical one to be involved in. I personally don’t want to enter a niche market, even if it seems like I could make some good money in it, if it’s not an ethical market.

That’s all for this update folks. As always, if you like my content I would greatly appreciate it if you shared it around using the social share button below.

If you really want to become an authority in your niche and produce good quality content, then you really need to know your audience and produce content that will connect with them.

By the way if you haven’t yet watched the webinar I did with Mike Ullman the other night, he presented some pretty compelling info so I highly recommend you watch that now, here’s the link to the replay: Webinar Replay

There are various ways that you can learn about your niche and become confident enough on the topic, even if you’ve never had an interest in that particular niche before, and I’ll share some tips in this post.

I think you need to be very careful when creating your content these days, and if you outsource it, which I do, make sure you spend time with your content writer to train them on how you want the content created. Trust me on this, it makes a big difference.

Niche Research Tools

As much as I dislike Twitter, I do still find some uses for it, and one of them is niche research. If you find a good Twitter account in your niche market, they will provide useful links to great resources in the niche, which can often save you time and uncover great info for you to learn from.

You do have to hunt around to find Twitter accounts that are not just spammy internet marketing ones with only links to their own stuff, however they are out there.

For example, if you’re considering going into the ‘online degrees’ niche, and in particular ‘online nursing’ then you could get some uselful info by searching for Twitter accounts, do to with nursing in general, and also online nursing programs.

Here’s one I found with a quick search: http://twitter.com/nurse_com

Find some quality Twitter accounts to follow and hopefully they’ll provide some great links to more quality info in the niche for you.

Another way to get great resources about a new niche, is to subscribe to a few good YouTube channels. I prefer watching videos to learn something myself, as I’m a big visual learner, so I like learning up about a niche by watching YouTube videos.

I just did a quick search while creating this post and found this channel – http://www.youtube.com/user/onlinedegrees/featured which is all about online degrees, this niche pays very well by the way. So go out a find a few good channels and see what they have to say about the niche and what they recommend. I’m sure you’ll get some good info pretty quickly.

An oldie but a goodie! Google Alerts is nothing new or terribly exciting, but it can be very useful. If you have never used it before, all you do is tell Google a phrase that you want it to look for new occurrences of as they happen, and send you an email. Setting up alerts is very easy to do, and is a great way to get info about your niche emailed to you.

What I do is set up a folder in Outlook and get all the emails from my alerts sent directly to that folder, and I check it out in my own time.

Forums

Most good niches have a forum these days, and this is where the target market of the niche hangs out and discusses what happening, so it makes sense to check them out and see what people are talking about.

Magazines

Just today I was out with my family at the local mall, and I saw a magazine that was in one of the niche markets I’m building a site in right now. So without delay I bought it and have already started ready the articles and in particular looking at who’s advertising in it.

It’s really important to know your niche well if you want to build an authority style website, as not only will this help you get more conversions, but people will also share your site around and you’ll collect links naturally too. So in closing, make sure you know your niche and spend some time researching it well.

In this post I’ll be explaining a very useful tricks on how to find niche markets and products to promote as an affiliate. I have included a video at the bottom of the post also.

When I first started out online, many years ago now, I struggled to know what niche to enter into.

These days I find it much easier and I want to share some tips on this for you all today.

The first peice of advice I will give you is, if you are someone that sticks exclusively to the Clickbank marketplace then the first thing you should do is start to do is look to other networks.

In particular physical goods, as there is a huge potential for marketing physical products, something I love to do!

Before I provide some practical tips for finding niches and products, I first want to clear up a few common misconecptions that people can have about physical products.

Aren’t the Commission Too Low With Physical Products?

The short answer to this is “NO!!” I get regular daily commissions of $75 on physical goods. There are some merchants that give you 50% commission on physical goods, although most are lower than this, but 4-10% is quite normal.

The thing you have to remember about physical products is that they are usually priced a lot higher than a Clickbank Ebook, so you can make great commissions still, even on products that only payout 4% like Amazon (although this goes up to 6% pretty fast)

Isn’t It Too Hard to Get Accepted by the Networks?

Again all I can say to this is “No” it’s not that hard. Sure some CPA affiliate marketing networks can be a little tougher to get into, but most physical product networks I’ve joined are easy to get accepted into. If you ever have any problems just pick up the phone and call them and explain to them your plan and you’ll get into 99% of them right there on the phone, I’ve done this many times.

Ok so now that I have cleared up some common misconceptions about marketing physical products, I want to share a practical tips on how to find a niche market. Below I have included a video for you:

From my years of experience coaching people online, I’ve found that one of the most common stumbling blocks for people, is knowing how to find good affiliate programs.

In this post I will help you overcome this, by sharing with you a sneaky little trick that involves some spy work and using the popular social media site called “Hubpages”.

It’s no surprize that a lot of affiliates use Hugpages, as the domain has authority in Google, and it’s pages can rank quite easily. This makes Hubpages a great place to do some market research to find some good affiliate programs.

Let me explain what I mean exactly. If you head over to www.hubpages.com and click on the “topics” tab across the top, you will then be taken to the categories within the site.

What I like to do then, is browser through the categories looking for pages that have been set up by affiliates. For this post I will show you an example I did which took me all of 5 mins to do.

Under: “Home, Family, Parenting” ==> “Home Furnishings” ==> “Garden Furniture”, you will see a Hubpage called “Vintage Garden Furniture”

It’s very clear that this Hubpage is targeting the keyword phrase “Vintage Garden Furniture”, so what I then do is check out the search volume of this keyword phrase and also the SEO competition for it. (see the images below where I have displayed this).

This phrase gets 3600 searches a month on exact match, and there is hardly any SEO competition for it whatsoever. If this is your Hubpage, then I do apologize, however these are the disadvantages of using these kind of Web 2.0 sites, because everyone can see what you are doing.

Here the key advantage of this rather sneaky technique, most people use sites like Hubpages because they know that you don’t have to do as much back linking on the pages to get top Google rankings. The reason for this is because as I mentioned above, the domain of Hugpages.com has authority in Google. Authority sites require little no backlinks, just look at Amazon.

However it is not hard to out rank this kind of sites if you do a little backlinking to your website. So for this example you can easily ride on the back of this persons great keyword research, build a page targeting that keywords and just go better SEO than them!

This particular person is monetizing this keyword phrase with Ebay, which is not a bad option for this kind of phrase, however I know that Ebay are strict to join as an affiliate marketing expert. Therefore all you need to do is rinse and repeat what I just did for all the categories and sub-categories on Hubpages until you find a product that Amazon or Clickbank have, and you can affiliate yourself with.

This is not the only way to find good affiliate programs and products, but you would be amazed how many great keywords you can uncover in minutes by using the strategy, because essentially you are working smarter and not harder, which is what I like to do!

Enjoy

Hi Everyone,

In this weeks post I am going to stick to the theme of working smarter and not harder, and I am therefore going to show you a very simple and effective way that you can leverage the work of your competition, and also get some very valuable links from .edu and .gov domains.

Building back links to your website is absolutely key when it comes to getting good search engine rankings. However if you have spent any time doing this you will realize that it can be hard work.

However there is are free ways that can help you see what your competition have done, in regards to back linking their sites, and that is by using search strings in Yahoo.

The first thing you want to do is get a few url’s of your top competitors and for example purposes let’s use this site: www.barkbuster.com. What I would do is then type this into Yahoo: link:http://www.barkbusters.com

Below is a screen shot with an example of some results:

Keep in mind that when you are searching like this, if you are searching for a professional well established site, you will find that a lot of the links, .edu and .gov included, are natural links and therefore it will be tough for you to get links from these sites.

However if you search for a typical affiliate websites back links then it is a safe bet that these links will be all forced and therefore there is every chance that you can go off and create a link there also! What I mean by forced is the website owner went off and created them, so they didn’t just get linked to naturally from other sites.

Government and Education Links

Not long ago I did a post on how to search for blogs and forums that were on .edu and .gov domains, which I hope you found helpful, and below is another example of how to to this. All you need to do is type these strings into Google:

site:.gov blog

site:.edu blog

You can also add you niche keyword before the word blog to find specific blogs to your niche , but to be honest I find this narrows the search field too much so I rarely do it.

By typing this into Google the results are for government and education domains that also have a blog. Where there is a blog there is often comments, and that is where you want your links to be.

Oh and if you are really lucky you might find a military domain to get a link from: site:.mil

Now you may also want to find forums on these domain also, so one way to do that is to search on:

inurl:edu forum

inurl:gov forum

What you have to realize is that finding these blogs and forums that will allow a link to your site can take time, but you have to remember that these links are worth A LOT more for your search engine results than regular links.

Also if the links you do successfully place are ‘No Follow’ then don’t be discouraged, because many leading SEO experts agree that ‘No Follow’ from these trusted domains still getting indexed and help your sites rankings.

My last point before I finish this weeks post, is that once you find a site that you want to post a link on, make sure you use the Google Advanced Search technique that I talked about a few weeks ago. If you missed it then here is the link to that post: High Page Rank Links

These are just some ways of searching for back links, there are many more, but this should help you find some useful links for your sites.

Have a great day!

Matt

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well and enjoying 2010 so far!

To kick things of this year I thought it would be a good idea to share, perhaps one of the biggest lessons that I have learned in my online marketing career, and that is to work smarter and not harder.

So, in this post I will be sharing with you some tricks that you can use, to ensure that you get the most out of your marketing, and work smarter than the bunch!

I see a large number of newbie internet marketers, in their over zealous enthusiasm to make money online, race in, head first and build websites that target any keywords they can think of.

Next they virtually burn themselves out doing SEO or burn their bank accounts out on Google Adwords, and sadly often to little positive effect.

One of the major reasons behind this, is that what most people fail to realize is that even if you have two keywords that get the exact same search volume, and are both directly related to the niche, and even be quite similar, they may not necessarily convert to sales at the same rate.

So with that said, it is a good idea if you’re an SEO marketer like myself, to test your keywords before you launch into a full blown SEO link building frenzy. This way you make sure you are targeting the highest converting keywords.

To do this you can set up a Google Adwords campaign and send traffic to your pages, using the keywords you are considering targeting for SEO and see what the results turn out like.

Some of you might not want to do this, as it can cost you anywhere from $50-$300 to test, but what you need to factor into the calculation, is that if you are targeting a keyword that converts at three times the rate of another one, then you will actually be saving money in the long term.

If you do have the cash to spend, another way to do this is to use PPC Spy tools and see if other marketers in your niche are using these keywords, and also what others, and for how long.

However I always like to make sure there is a free option available for everyone, and there is, that being your common sense!! You can have an educated guess at what keywords will convert to sales better than others, by just thinking about the mindset of the person who is typing that keyword into the search engine. I have mentioned this point before but it is so important that I really need to stress it again and again.

I like to refer to this as, how far down the sales line the person is. For example if they are ripe and ready to spend, then they might be typing words like: Buy XYZ, XYZ Review, XYZ Product, Best XYZ, XYZ Scam.

Obviously XYZ stands for the niche word, here’s an example : Buy Forex Trading Software.

However using the above example, the keyword: ‘Forex Trading Software’, would not convert as well as say: ‘Buy Forex Trading Software’. Its not that difficult to spot a keyword that a person, closer to pulling out their credit card, ready to buy is typing into the search box. However you would be surprized how many people just focus on the search volume, and don’t use their common sense, and consider the conversion rate.

One last point I want to add also, is that if you are working with a network that assigns you an affiliate manager, then do not be shy to ask them for as much information as you can, because they often have great statistics on how well different offers are converting on their network, and believe me this info can be like gold!

So in summary, one of the biggest lessons I learned in my career as an online marketer is to target keywords that convert. In fact with some really great converting keywords, you might only get 10 visitors a day only, but it can be the equivalent of 100 from another keyword.

That’s all from me, so remember to work smarter and not harder in 2010 by choosing your keywords carefully, you’ll thank yourself in the long run.

All the best

Hi everybody,

In today’s post I am going to be showing you a little trick for finding hot niches for affiliates, that focus on physical products. However the best part is that I am going to show you a great free tool from Google (no its not the keyword tool, but we will use it) that will make this process a whole lot easier.

What most affiliates do is focus heavily on Clickbank products, and this is not a bad thing, however the competition can be fierce in some niches. The great news is that you don’t have to stay in Clickbank, there is a HUGE amount of other networks that sell physical products which you can be an affiliate for too.

I have found that moving away from Clickbank can mean a lot less competition, which is always nice.

First of all, you will need to go the Google keyword tool and then click on the “Searched-based Keyword Tool” tab, see the image below:

The Search-based keyword tool is a free tool that is supposed to be used to enter your website into, and Google will provide some more related keywords for you to bid on in adwords. However you can also use this tool to find untapped niches that you can market in as an affiliate, either using PPC or SEO. All I can say is that this sort of market intelligence is absolutely priceless…yet you get it given to you for free!!

When you open the tool, you will then want to scroll to the bottom of the page and click the link that says: “or see top keywords across all categories”

Here is a screen shot to help you:

Then you will be taken to this screen, where you can browse categories of potential niches

You will notice that Google has kindly categorized niches for us, and when you open one up, by clicking on it, you can then drill down further and see more sub niches inside these larger ones.

This is some extremely valuable data for us as marketers, because Google are telling us what the hottest niches that people are searching for are, and they also show you, on the right, that people are spending money on these keywords, which is a healthy sign.

Now that you have a complete list of potential niches, that we know people are searching in, all we need to do then is go back to the Google Keyword tool and type some of these phrases in, and see what the results are.

For example purposes, I found the word “digital tv antenna”, so I typed that back into the Google keyword tool and I soon found more related keywords, such as “digital tv antenna reviews” that had a phrase match search volume of 1300 a month. Now that isn’t the greatest search volume, but it is a buying keyword phrase, so I know it would convert well.

What you then need to do is work out how competitive that phrase would be if you were going to build a simple website to promote it. You can do this by typing that phrase into Google itself in quotes and seeing how many competing pages there are. To do this just type your phrase like this into Google: “digital tv antenna review” .

How competitive is too competitive? Well that depends on your SEO skills, however as a rough guide if there is more 50,000 competiting pages when you type the word in quotes into Google, them maybe try another one.

Of course judging competition on the amount of competing pages alone, is not the greatest way to tell. Therefore you may also want to analyze the top 10 places in Google and in particular the top 5 and see what they are like.

I am not going to go into that now as I have covered this in previous posts and videos, however here is a quick checklist of what to look for: Page Rank, Back Links, Age of Domain, On Page SEO, and as a very rough guide, if you see a lot of authority sites like Amazon, and they are actually purposely trying to rank for that phrase, then that’s not so good.

When I say purposely trying to rank, I mean they have that exact keyword phrase in their pages Title tags, H1 tags, and meta description. Now I realize some of you reading this post might not be sure what I am talking about, so I encourage you to be proactive and do a quick Google search and learn what these terms mean, as it is crucial to know these basics of SEO.

Once you have found a niche and some keywords that you feel you could target, you will then need to see if you can find an affiliate program that you can join to promote products in that niche. You can do this by typing the niche word + affiliate into Google, so for example: “GPS + affiliate”, and searching this way. Or you can use the Amazon market place and simply place an Amazon widget on your site (see Amazon affiliates for more on this).

Well that’s all from me, I hope this has helped you to find ideas for more niches and products. Just remember when you are targeting keywords for SEO, make sure you take your time to find ones that you have the ability to rank for, and also words that have a high level of commercial intent, such as “reviews”

All the best,

Matt

Hi Guys,

I want to share with you one of the biggest lessons I learned in my internet marketing career that really made a huge difference to my success.

It began the day the penny dropped and I realized that forums were my best friend.

I noticed they were places rich with useful information. The reason for this is that forums are where your target market hang out, so it’s like the ultimate Spytool!

In this post I am going to explain three great ways to use forums in your internet marketing strategies so you too can benefit from them like I have.

Leads, Links and Language

There are a number of ways to gain value from being in forums, the most obvious is if you are of course looking for information and want to interact with other like minded people. However let me share with you the three L’s; Leads, Links and Language.

Language

Let’s first take a look at language. You might be wondering what on earth I am talking about with this one, so let me explain.

Perhaps the most important aspect of internet marketing is mastering the skill of writing sales copy. I can not stress enough how important this is. You can have all the traffic you like and a super hot product, but if people are not convinced by what your sales copy has to say, and if it doesn’t strike a chord with them, then you can kiss those juicy commissions goodbye.

What’s this got to do with Forums? I’m glad you asked.

Forums that are in your niche markets are where your target market hang out. By searching around in forums you can very quickly find out what the major concerns and challenges are that your target market have. Not only that, you will also learn the language they use to describe the market and its products.

I vividly remember writing a sales copy for a client one time, on a topic that I knew very little about. However being the young buck that I was, I thought I knew what this market wanted to hear and went ahead a wrote the copy, the way I wanted to.

This was a fatal error and a big lesson for me. Luckily the error in my ways was uncovered before the product went live and I was able to amend the page. My mistake was assuming that the target audience thought and described things like I did..however I wasn’t even interested in this niche in the slightest, and my assumptions were wrong.

When I recognized my mistake, I ate humble pie and went straight to Google and searched for forums in this niche, did my due diligence and read post after post until I was confident that I had discovered what the real issues this target market were facing.

So whether you are an affiliate writing article and review pages, or a product developer creating your own sales pages, make sure you profile your target market by visiting forums, and do NOT just assume you know what your target market are thinking.

Find out who they are, how old they are, what products they have bought, what their challenges are, and make sure when you write your copy that you speak to these challenges and how you can help people overcome them!

This is the great advantage that we as internet marketers have…researching our target audience is really not that hard, and often the market intelligence we need is right under our noses!

Links

Another reason to use forums is for gaining back links to your site. Keep in mind that not all forums have the ‘Do Follow’ tag switched on, so if this is the main reason for you using the forum then you should check this out before you jump in.

For those of you who don’t know how to do this, I recommend using one of the Firefox add-on that highlights the links in different colors so you can very quickly see if they are follow or no follow links.

Here’s a link to the Firefox add on for you: Do Follow Add-on

In the examples below you can see what the add-on does to links. The image on the left is
from a dog training forum where the signature link is a NO FOLLOW and shows up as a pink color, and is no good for SEO purposes. However the image of the right is from another dog training forum where the signature file is DO FOLLOW and is highlighted in purple, and they also allow keyword anchor text links.

In order to find forums in your niche, you can simply type into Google : YOUR NICHE +FORUM and browse the results pages. Some niches will not have forums unfortunately, however most will. If not maybe you could try starting one yourself.

When you sign up for a forum make sure that before you start posting you set up your signature file. This is where you want to have a link leading back to the page that you want to rank in the search engines. Make sure that you use Keyword Anchor Text for the link too.

So instead of having link as it is, you will want to have: YOUR KEYWORD PHRASE as the clickable link.

The great thing about forum signatures is that they are in every post that you write. So you will start to create a lot of links leading back to the page the more you post. These links can of course be changed at a moments notice to another page if you so desire, which can be useful if you want to rank a different page quickly.

Imagine if you have 1000 posts across multiple forums? You will have some pretty good SEO juice from that.

Leads

The third great way to use forums is to generate leads. Now this works very well in the Internet Marketing niche, however it does work in other markets too.

What I am referring to is instead of using your signature link for SEO value, you can have it leading to a squeeze page. To do this well you will want to make the signature catching and enticing, so people that see it will want to click it and arrives at your squeeze page.

Once they are at the squeeze page, if your page is good the rest is pretty straight forward.

Another effective trick that I have used, and continue to use, is interacting in forums of products that I am promoting. This is a smart approach to take, because these leads are people that are BUYERS and they are worth a lot more to you than just any old lead.

Some forums will allow you to use images in your signature, and this can work well, because you can then create more eye catching signatures to increase the clicks you get to the squeeze page.

The key to using this approach to build a list is to post regularly and as much as you can. The more posts you make, the more people will see you when they use the forum to search for help. It is also important to take the time to write good quality posts, because when people read your great posts and are impressed they will check for your signature in more cases.

Well that’s all from me!

Remember the three L’s, Language, Links and Leads and that forums are your best friend.

Thanks for reading,
